Q: How old is the oldest type 1 diabetic to live?
How old is the oldest type 1 diabetic to live?I'm a type 1 and im just wondering.
A: Insulin wasn't discovered until 1921 and not readily available till several years later.
We do not yet have 100 years of research on the subject.
The people who say they know people close to 100 who are great probably didn't get type 1 till later in life. You can get it at any time.
The options are open and endless.
Let's bash some records !
Q: What can a type-1 diabetic do for short term health insurance?
My girlfriend, a type-1 diabetic, was at a miserable job for 3 months waiting to begin health insurance. After putting up with it for that long, she had to quit. Now, most other jobs she has been interviewing at require a 3 month wait until health coverage starts. What can we do to get her health insurance in-between jobs, even though she has a "pre-existing condition"? I am worried about something happening to her in the meantime and we need to get her insured. Short of getting married and adding her to my plan, are there any viable alternatives? Thanks.
A: HIPPA doesnt allow diabetes to be considered pre-existing
Q: What can a type-1 diabetic eat after oral surgery?
My friend is a type-1 diabetic, and he's getting his wisdom teeth removed. Now, after that kind of surgery you have to eat mushy soft foods that are high in calories, to keep the body strong. But with his medical condition he can't really have a whole lot of calorie rich foods. I'm going to have him take a ton of ester-c to help his immune system but his doctors are idiots and have no reconmondations about what he should eat. Anyone have any info?
A: You have received good advice so far.
I am concurred about "his doctors are idiots and have no reconmondations about what he should eat" If he is not satisfied about his doctors he should get new ones. The proper doctor to treat diabetes is an endocrinologist. There are also diabetes education programs. He should inquire about them with his doctor or at a local hospital. Usually there will be a certified dietitian as part of the program.
Your friend should ask his oral surgeon and his doctors what medications, if any he should not take because of the surgery.
Q: Can a multi vitamin cause a type 1 diabetic to have vision changes?
My son, 32, is a type 1 diabetic. He decided to start taking multi vitamins. He took one in the morning without eating breakfast first and started see "double." He then threw up twice and felt better and his vision returned to normal. This was scary.
A: Yes quite possible. The vitamin industry is completely unregulated and who really knows whats in there. I was once big on a multi but have since changed my thinking because of what you mention and liver problems.
Vitamins on an empty stomach are quite unpredictable. Have him eat a healthy diet and maybe include a B complex and C, an occasional Magnesium, maybe a D. See how that goes.
I personally think certain multi vitamins can change and interrupt the workings of the organs and especially the liver, such as chromium which is abused in diet pills as it drives the insulin levels, almost criminal in my opinion.
Q: good ways to keep your blood sugar low when you are a type 1 diabetic?
I just found out a couple of days ago that I'm a type 1 diabetic. Definitely a new thing you have to get use to by checking your carbs on everything you eat as well as checking your blood sugar and giving yourself an insulin shot. I was just wondering what are somethings I could eat and other ways that could keep my blood sugar down? Any ideas?
A: My doctor put me on the "Little House on the Prairie" diet. Basically, if they didn't have it back then you shouldn't eat it now. This cuts out most of the processed foods but there are still some foods out there that will raise your bs. Also, be careful of foods that say "sugar free" because they can still have sugar alcohols which raise bs and cause gas. South Beach has a nice selection of quick meals that are lower in carbs. South Beach diet phase 2 is another good idea. The ADA has a list of "free" foods on their website (ones that should have minimum impact on your bs).
I went out and bought a nutrition book by Calorie King and carried that around for awhile til I got a better Idea on portions a carbs. It also has a section on chain restaurant menus. Big help!!!
Q: Im a type 1 Diabetic and ive noticed lately that after i get a bath my feet are aching really bad.?
Im a newly diagnosed type 1 diabetic im only 22 years old and im wondering if this is normal? My feet & hands are always cold but when i get a bath my feet ache and all these blue veins get huge in my feet. They're very tender to the touch. What should i do?
A: It could be diabetic neuropathy which is nerve damage caused by the diabetes. Sometimes heat can make it worse. Turn your water down a little cooler and not so hot. Also take showers instead of baths. The soaking may be making it worse. This may improve over time as your blood sugars get more under control long-term. Plus there are medications like Neurontin that can be prescribed.
Q: What are the affects of MS Contin on a Type 1 Diabetic person?
If a Type 1 Diabetic person takes MS Contin, can it affect the person? If so, how? Will it affect the insulin that the person took?
A: Please see the web pages for more details on Morphin oral (generic name) MS Contin (brand name). Medical literature is silent about the adverse reaction on insulin or Type1 diabetic patients.
Q: Is it possible for a type 1 diabetic to get a flat stomach?
Well I'm a very fit type 1 diabetic but I have never had a truely flat stomach since I was diagnosed (age 7 I'm 13 now). Is it possible and how?
A: I've had type one diabetes since I was seven as well, I'm seventeen now. And I've never had a flat stomach. It's because I give some shots in my stomach, and the scar tissues build up. Also, if you have/had a pump and you are injecting your sites in your stomach. I've had a fairly decent body but I have a "pooch" right on the bottom, near my belly button. It's annoying, but I can't do anything to get rid of it. Maybe not do shots there? I hope this helped.
Q: quick ways to lower your blood sugar for a type 1 diabetic?
I'm a type 1 diabetic and my numbers are always on the high side. I was just wondering if there were any quick ways to lower your blood sugar?
A: If you are a type 1 diabetic, and you are "always on the high side" then the most likely reason your blood sugars are high is because your food and insulin are not well matched. It may be that you are not taking enough of your basal insulin as well. These are things that you must discuss with your doctor and see if perhaps your doctor can work with you to change your insulin. The BEST plan is to take a long acting basal insulin like Lantus (there's also a new one the name of which I forget) for all your needs without food.
Then also taking a short acting bolus insulin like Humalog (others are fine too) to correct your highs before eating AND to match to the amount of food you are about to eat.
If you are on a different insulin plan like 70/30 or are not matching your insulin to your food...it's harder to gain control of your blood glucose.
However, with ANY change you MUST see your doctor and discuss with him/her. In fact if you are NOT seeing an endocrinologist for your diabetes care, I highly recommend you do. The endo is the expert in this area and some general practioners are not as good with diabetes care--some are, but some are kinda old fashioned and stuck in older ways of doing things that are 'safe' but not as effective.
Also once you've seen your doc or endo...ask for a referral to a diabetes educator and registered dietitian. They can work with you to refine your insulin plan and figure out how to eat or count carbs so that everything works together nicely.
Good luck!
Q: How can my mom prevent type 1 diabetic reactions?
My mom just had a diabetic reaction (type 1). Is there any way that i can help her prevent one happening again?
A: Yes, she can. Hook your mom up with a diabetic educator. She needs to learn how to count carbs and then take the right amount of insulin. It's fairly easy. You can help her with the math.
When taking insulin, err on the side of too little insulin. In other words, it's better to have blood sugar higher than normal. Having very low blood sugar is life threatening and can lead to stroke, heart attack and coma.
Also, I hope you have some glucose tablets or liquid at hand, or maybe honey. All of those sugars can be quickly absorbed in the mouth and enter the bloodstream through the mucus membranes. Always good in an emergency.
It's very good of you to be involved with your mom's condition. There is never a dull moment when you're around diabetes! Keep up the good work.
Q: Have you been discriminated for being a type 1 diabetic?
I know it might sound like a silly question but have you? And i'm not talking about work or employment. I'm talking about your day-to-day lives. I am a type 1 diabetic and I want to know if you have be discriminated for being a diabetic, because I sure have. EG: people make fun of you, people be general bastards and you didn't do them any wrong.
A: I remember in 1st grade being on the bus a few kids had found out that I was a diabetic. No one would sit with me. They kept yelling that I had a disease and cooties. I cried all the way home and didn't want to go back to school ever again. It happen once in high school to. All of that was so long ago.
Q: type 1 diabetic valentine cookie recipe?
can anyone give me a good valentine cookie recipe for a type 1 diabetic, i cant seem to find the right one for valentines day. thanks!
well they still need to count the intake of carbs and inject insulin for ever so amount. its just a hassle, they only need to eat sugar when their blood sugar is low. but to much sugar can make their blood sugar go high. so its best to have a cookie recipe that doesnt have a lot of carbs.

Q: Are there any good Diet pills to take when you are a type 1 diabetic?
Type 1 diabetic since the age of 5, now I am 25 yrs old. Overweight! Height 5"4' Weight 180 lbs.
A: Insulin is a fat making hormone. It turns the carbohydrates we eat into pure fat and packs them on our bodies.
Control your appetite for carbohydrates, limit them to 30 or less per meal. That way you won't have to take as much bolus insulins to cover them and you can lose weight.
You have reached the age where the insulin and carbs HAVE to be counted! You are paying for that big time!
More exercise and less carby foods equal both less bolus insulin and weight loss.
Pills depend on tight food plan control and heavy exercise, so why buy the pills when you can do it without them.
Q: Can a 17 year old type 1 diabetic use Exubera insulin?
Can a 17 year old type 1 diabetic use Exubera insulin? if so, how does he start?
A: It is not indicated for use by a 17 year old. However his doctor could place him on it under his direct supervision. Exubera is a decent drug, but its a short acting inhaled insulin. WHich means he would still have to take his long acting insulin as well.
Q: Is it safe for a type 1 diabetic at disney world?
I am a type 1 diabetic and my family is going to disney world in march is there any concerns for a diabetic to go to disney world?
A: Make sure you wear your Medic-Alert bracelet on and visible. Carry small healthy snacks, as the food at Disney is outrageously expensive and you may have to wait too long in a line to get your food. In addition to the other great advice from the other users, I would like to recommend that you also familiarize yourself with the location of the nurse's/emergency/health station there, just in case. Have a good trip and have fun!
