Q: how can an unbalanced diet lead to type 2 diabetes?
what type if diet do you need to have to get type 2 diabetes?
what does the diet consist of?
A: This is part of the problem with diabetes people misunderstand the information given out and the mistakes are then quoted as facts. An unbalanced diet does not lead to type 2 diabetes as such. What it does is increase the risk of somebody who is predisposed genetically to the disease.
Q: Have you been successfull at managing type 2 Diabetes with diet and exercise?
If so what has it been that has made you most successfull.
A: On one of the Diabetes forums, a lady exercises by running up and down her stairs before eating and has been able to not use Metformin to keep her sugar level. Just passing it on.
Q: type 2 diabetes diet??
Hello,
My brother just got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure and he is on medication for both. nobody in out immediate family has had any of this before so hes the first one so nobody really knows what type of diet he should have.
does anyone know where i can find a list of foods its ok for him to eat with type 2 diabetes?
also hes a truck driver so hes always on the road so it will be hard for him to eat home cooked meals.
we were thinking he should not go to Fast food places that have a drive thru that he should go to resturants kinda like.
A: www.calorieking.com is a fabulous web site with nutritional information.
What he can or can not eat depends on the way that he is being treated. Does he take oral meds? insulin? diet control only?
He really should ask for a referral to spend a little time with a nutritionist to understand his restrictions. Also, many fast foods are more of a problem in the fat and salt departments than carbohydrates. The sodium could be a major contributing factor to his hypertension.
Q: I would like to have a good diet for diabetes 2?
my husband has diabetes 2 and I would like to know what he can eat and in what portions.
A: You and your husband should make an appointment with a dietitian to know what diet suits his individual needs. No two people are alike.
make sure to sign up for diabetes magazines and read books about diabetes that have been published in the past five yrs.
Education is the key.
There are no more one fits all diets.
Good luck
Q: Low Carbohydrate diet for type 2 diabetes?
How do people feel about a low carb diet with type 2 diabetes.
i am on it and have lowered my blood glucose level but the information is confusing as doctors say you simply need a healthy diet and those with diabetes say low carb diet is the answer to bg control.
any comments welcome.
A: Low carb is the answer to sugar levels in the blood. The Glycemic index is the best guide for low carbs . The best index available is :
http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm
The glycemic index (GI) is a numerical system of measuring how much of a rise in circulating blood sugar a carbohydrate triggers–the higher the number, the greater the blood sugar response. So a low GI food will cause a small rise, while a high GI food will trigger a dramatic spike. A list of carbohydrates with their glycemic values is shown below. A GI is 70 or more is high, a GI of 56 to 69 inclusive is medium, and a GI of 55 or less is low.
The glycemic load (GL) is a relatively new way to assess the impact of carbohydrate consumption that takes the glycemic index into account, but gives a fuller picture than does glycemic index alone. A GI value tells you only how rapidly a particular carbohydrate turns into sugar. It doesn't tell you how much of that carbohydrate is in a serving of a particular food. You need to know both things to understand a food's effect on blood sugar. That is where glycemic load comes in. The carbohydrate in watermelon, for example, has a high GI. But there isn't a lot of it, so watermelon's glycemic load is relatively low. A GL of 20 or more is high, a GL of 11 to 19 inclusive is medium, and a GL of 10 or less is low.
Foods that have a low GL almost always have a low GI. Foods with an intermediate or high GL range from very low to very high GI.
Both GI and GL are listed here. The GI is of foods based on the glucose index–where glucose is set to equal 100. The other is the glycemic load, which is the glycemic index divided by 100 multiplied by its available carbohydrate content (i.e. carbohydrates minus fiber) in grams. (The "Serve size (g)" column is the serving size in grams for calculating the glycemic load; for simplicity of presentation I have left out an intermediate column that shows the available carbohydrates in the stated serving sizes.) Take, watermelon as an example of calculating glycemic load. Its glycemic index is pretty high, about 72. According to the calculations by the people at the University of Sydney's Human Nutrition Unit, in a serving of 120 grams it has 6 grams of available carbohydrate per serving, so its glycemic load is pretty low, 72/100*6=4.32, rounded to 4.
Try it you will like it...>
Q: I have type 2 diabetes and will be starting P90x this week. Will I need to modify any of the diet plan?
I've been cleared by the doc for the program but is there anything anyone can recommend with the diet plan who has diabetes and followed the routine? So far I'm only taking metformin once a day. I found out about it 2 mo ago and pray I can get off it altogether with P90x.
A: Well the P90X has a pretty healthy diet so you shouldn't have to. Just listen to your body, if you feel weak and dizzy be sure to eat a snack. Other than that you should be fine.
Good luck.

Q: What kind of diet should i be on i have type 2 diabetes?
I have type 2 diabetes I seriously need to lose around 10-15 pounds to lower my ac1 level anyone know a good diet to go on?
A: The healthiest diet possible. The one our bodies were optimized for over eons of time. It wasn't until the last century that type two diabetes became a problem. Why? Manufactured foods. People who live in the rural areas of Asia and South America who live off the land, don't get type two diabetes. So, the answer is, plenty of raw, natural fruits and vegetables. Few refined carbs, dairy, and meats. No junk foods at all. Combine that with plenty of daily exercise, and you might be able to do as I have done and put away the diabetes medications for good.
Q: South Indian diet for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes?
What is the healthy South Indian diet to cure insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes?
A: Fiber
The Indian Council of Medical Research suggests a daily intake of 25 to 35 grams of fiber. Fiber helps to naturally reduce glucose levels. In the Indian diet, high fiber foods include things like bran, whole grains, cereal, fresh fruit, dried fruit, raw vegetables, red beans, bean sprouts, mullet preparations, cluster beans, drumstick stems, lotus stems, curry leaves, pomegranate, green chilies, coriander, and cardomon seeds.Introduction to high fiber foods should be done slowly and progressively; increase the amount of fiber by five grams a day until you meet the 35 grams per day limit. Doing so will help you to avoid the feeling of a distended abdomen and problems with flatulence or bowel regularity.
Carbohydrates
The diabetic should consume 65 to 75 percent of daily calories in complex carbohydrates. This will ensure that blood sugar levels remain regulated. Complex carbohydrate consumption helps minimize blood cholesterol triglycerides and also improves digestive processes. Food sources for the diabetic include legumes, rice and whole wheat bread.
Proteins
25 percent of daily calories come from protein. Food sources include soy beans, cheese, chicken, egg whites, fish and leafy green vegetables. A diet that is excessive in protein can have harmful effects on the liver and kidneys, forcing them to work harder.
Channa
Channa dal is a legume that us a common part of the Indian diet; these legumes are revered for their anti-diabetic properties. Channa is fiber-rich and lower blood sugar levels naturally. It also reduces fasting blood sugar levels by thwarting the passage of sugars into the urine; this reduces one's insulin requirements.
Cholesterol
The Indian diet for type 2 diabetes also recommends lowering cholesterol intake. High levels of cholesterol contribute to cardiovascular disease; no more than 300 milligrams of cholesterol should be eaten daily.Baking, steaming, roasting or grilling foods reduce cholesterol levels, rather than frying them. Consume low-fat or skim milk products instead of whole-milk varieties.
Q: Can someone who had type 2 diabetes but got rid of it with diet and exercise, now suffer from hypoglycemia?
My friend was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes years ago, but lost 50 poiunds through ongoing diet and exercise and the doc said she basically doesn't have it anymore. Then she started experiencing shakiness and other symptoms in between meals that goes away with food. The doctor said she is likely suffering from hypoglycemia.
Thoughts/feedback on this?
A: I am a person who HAD diabetes, for many, many years. I started out taking a pill for diabetes then progressed to insulin.
I have lost over 100 pounds through dieting and careful management of the foods that I eat. I was TOLD by my doctor that diabetes can indeed be reversed. Diabetes CAN be a thing of the past.
I no longer take insulin and no longer take any medication for Daibetes. IF I were to resume my past lifestyle, I could easily suffer from Diabetes again. I have a strong family history of diabetes. BUT...you CAN reverse that trend, by always being careful of the foods you eat and test your glucose level on occasion to make sure that your glucose level remains under 140.
Hypoglycemia became an issue for me when I lost all that weight, which is WHY my doctor finally removed me from insulin AND the diabetes pills. So the answer to your question is...YES you can suffer from hypoglycemia, after having diabetes AND you can suffer from hypo, even if you HAVE diabetes.
Since I was told that I no longer had diabetes, I have to disagree with the answers you have received. I was just told that I was susceptible to getting diabetes again, if my physical condition (weight or poor eating habits) were to return.
Congratulations to your friend for her weight loss. Tell her to keep a check on her glucose levels since she IS having symptoms of low blood levels. (Which her doctor already told her) Remind her to eat several small meals, everyday and carry a piece of candy with her at all times, if she has any more symptoms of shakiness, etc. Then...for her to have a small meal. This will help her glucose level AND her weight.
Best Wishes to you both. Heather
Q: Is it safe for people with type 2 diabetes to take diet pills lose weight?
im a 21yr old female in the usa , im 245 pounds 5'7, i am dieting but it doesnt seem to be enough, i have trouble exercising because of a heart problem and im desperate to lose the weight
A: If you have a heart problem, you certainly don't want to use diet pills of any kind. They can be extremely hard on the heart, even the over the counter ones. Being a diabetic does not mean you can't lose weight, it's just that everyone wants to do it over night. Try the South Beach diet. Many dietitians and nutritionists recommend it for their patients that are diabetic and it was designed for people with heart problems. Just skip phase one and start with phase 2. Or learn to count carbs. Your meals should consist of no more than 45 grams of carbs each meal and you can have 2 daily in between meal snacks that are no more than 15 grams of carbs each. As far as exercise, all you have to do is walk every day for 30 to 45 minutes. If you stick to either one of these diets, trust me, you will lose weight and it will be easier to keep off than if you did it with diet pills. The South Beach diet will teach you about good and bad carbs, and gives you lists of things you can and cannot eat. It is a very easy, safe diet and weight loss can be quick in some cases...it depends on how much you weigh now, and how well you stick to the diet and how much exercise you get. It claims to get rid of belly fat first. I use this diet all the time, to control my disease. In the beginning, as with any diet, it can be a little hard, but is actually very easy compared to many diets. It does not tell you to eat a certain portion of food, and does not count carbs or calories. You will like it, most who try it do.
Q: How can we prevent diabetes type 2? What would be the best diet to prevent?
I currently am writing an article about diabetes. I have been searching and reading many evidence-based articles. However, I'd like to hear your own opinion on diabetes type 2.
A: As you probably know heredity, plays a big roll.
For diet, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and poultry, Stay away from the white stuff, white bread, potato's, sugar, white rice etc. Eat as little processed food as possible . All carbs are not created equal a white potato and a sweet potato have the same carbs but metabolize differently, check out the Glycemic Index on foods it will give you more info. Exercise, weight is a big part of it also. If it runs in your family, I don't know if you can prevent it, but maybe you can delay it. The closer to nature the food is the better. Read labels and don't go by net carbs unless your on Adkins. STAY AWAY FROM JUNK FOOD! I hope this helps.
Q: Do you know anyone who has been able to "reverse" type 2 diabetes with diet, exercise or other means?
A: I did, and it wasn't all that hard. I lost fifty pounds, started eating right and exercising daily, and I have had normal blood sugars and normal A1C tests for the last four years.
Q: Type 2 Diabetes diet?
How am I supposed to eat? I'm pretty sure Carbs make blood sugar high. I'm so confused on what I'm supposed to do and each google link tells me something different.
A: Your Dr. needs to send you to a nutritionist.
Everyone has there own special diet that they need to follow.
Some people need more, some people need less carbs, vegetables, so on and so forth ;)
Q: Diet 2 get rid of type 2 diabetes?
I am about to go 2 the store. I found out recently that i am hyperinsulinemia. I need 2 know what foods I should get to help me become healthy and loose weight. Can someone give me some helpful suggestions. What kind of diet should I put myself on to get me healthy and loose the fat?
A: Losing weight is not an easy thing for anyone to do. For type 2 diabetics it is even harder if the natural insulin is preventing glucose from entering the muscles and feeding them. Some of us lost enormous amount of weight from not knowing. The rest gained weight!! This is the pits part of this stupid disease!!
I follow mostly the South Beach Living phase 2 food plan. If you will lose all the complex carbs and starchy veggies for a while, you may be able to lose weight, control the glucose levels, and be healthier.
Complex carbs are breads, cereals, rices, other grain products, dried beans/lentils. Starchy veggies include most root veggies, peas and corn. Sweet soft fruits are not your friend either.
I eat mostly a 3 oz serving of meat and a large dark green leafy salad with tomatos and some other goodies like cucumbers. I always use real dressing. Fat does not make more fat!!!! It slows down the absorbtion of carbs to where we don't spike as much.
For breakfast I usually have a couple of eggs and 2 or 3 slices bacon or sausages.
Apples, half a medium with cream cheese dip, nuts, cheeses, things like that are good snackies.
I get Spring Salad mix, tomatoes, any other fruit veggie, apples (tart preferably), and cheeses with my grocery shopping. I raise beef and lamb so don't bother with meats, but you will want to include some meats.
a 3 oz cooked serving is like 1 chicken thigh or a small hamburger patty. Like about the size of a bar or soap or your closed fist.
good luck!! And remember to walk an hour every day as fast as you can!! takes time, don't worry about milage, just clock your walk!!
