Q: will stem cell research permanently cure high blood pressure, diabetes & high clolesterol?
will stem cell research cure high blood pressure, diabetes, & high clolesterol for good?

A: There has been some promising research using stem cells to CURE diabetes in lab mice. but it is a LONG way from lab mice to human treatments. IF this proves useful in humans, it will be 20-30 YEARS before treatment is available for humans. High blood pressure and high cholesterol, if not otherwise caused by diabetes, show little promise of being cured by stem cells. High blood pressure is most often caused by some other underlying disease, like diabetes or kidney disease. High Cholesterol is about 75% poor lifestyle choice, and about 25% inherited, neither of which stem cells affect.

Q: was there something on stem cell research for diabetes?

A: I recall hearing something about islet cells in stem cell research for diabetes.

Q: How far has the stem cell research come in curing Type II Diabetes?

A: There was actually this study that started out in Argentina where they demonstrated stem cells being implanted into type 2 diabetes patients through their pancreas. Aparently it improves production of the Endogenous Insulin, decreases blood glucose levels and glycated hemoglobin levels faster than other treatments. I mean its incredible. I think it was like 83 or so percent of the patients actually could abandon the drugs they used to stimulate insulin production or the insulin that they were using previously! Scientists say that most likely this extreme improvement is from that of the implanted stem cells regenerating the destroyed Beta Cells in the pancreas of diabetes patients and that the beta cells themselves produce the new insulin. I'm pretty into this subject especially because my father is type 2 diabetes..i hope this helps! -Also to the guy above me... type II is not always derived from obesity. As in my dads case its called maturity-onset diabetes in youth (MODY)- its a genetic form of type 2 diabetes that develops when your in your teens or from a traumatic event and stays with you.

Q: If stem cell research proves positive, will it help cure type one diabetes?
Generally, when people talk about diabetes and diabetics in general, they are referring to type 2 diabetics, seeing as only 10% of the diabetic population has type one. They say that stems cells may be able to cure diabetes. Are they talking about just type two, or type one, also?

A: The theory is that it will cure both along with a lot of other genetic diseases. I am a 42 year type I diabetic. You can find out more on my site below:

Q: What do you think of stem cell research?
I think it can be a good thing. The cells do not have to be taken from the fetus, you can harvast the same cells in the umbilical cord. I think a lot could be done with Research provided by Stem Cells. It could cure diabetes and other ravaging diseases. johnny_100pesos- you didn't read the question properly. I am not for that kind of research, and I would ask you to not paint all scientists with the same brush. Science is a lovely vast field of knowledge. TJTB- Thank You! Most people think that a 16 year old can't have any opinions! The reality is I can probably outwit half the people on this site! jeeper_peeper321- No, Bush vetoed the bill.

A: I'm all for it. I have a paralyzed son. And I think if one of the Bush twins was paralyzed and he had to watch his child struggle every single day to simply go urinate or defecate then I believe Mr. Bush would change his mind on it. There are a lot of diseases that could be helped with stem cell research. And Paralyzed Veterans, like my son, could be helped. But oh no! Let's send them over there and if they come back with legs that don't work, then too bad because we don't believe in stem cell research. It's ridiculous. That's why I support Barack Obama. He's big on stem cell research.

Q: What is your opinion on embryonic stem cell research?
in the production of embryonic stem cells, embryos must be destroyed. much controversy surrounds this as some religions regard an embryo as a potential person and thence has its associated rights and protections. despite the moral and ethical issues, embryonic stem cells are believed to have a greater ability to treat debilitating diseases such as diabetes, than adult stem cells. what is your opinion on embryonic stem cell research? is it worth it?

A: It holds a promise to cure diseases which are killing people, as you know. The stem cells from embryos can come from aborted fetuses, which there are plenty of, regardless of whether embryonic stem cell research is around or not. So why not make use of otherwise perfectly acceptable embryos to extend the life, and maybe cure, all sorts of world wide diseases? Bush and the religious people think that women will go into the business of selling embryos, and they take offense at that. Embryos are already being discarded, so what is the issue? These same people, including Bush, think the death penalty is okay. You know what? You can't have it both ways - you either support life in all it's forms, criminal or otherwise, or you don't. If using an embryo is murder, then so is the death penalty - can you tell me the difference? And if 'they' think abortions are 'anti-God', why don't they think the same thing about the death penalty?

Q: How Do Type 1 Diabetics Feel About Stem Cell Research?
So, President-Elect Obama supports stem cell research to find a cure for diabetes. My question is: Would you take the cure if you knew it was found from part of an aborted fetus? I know I would not. I have had diabetes for over half of my life, so I understand all of the different viewpoints.

A: There ARE other sources of stem cells other than those obtained from embryos, such as cord blood, bone marrow, and more recent research using cloning techniques with adult cells. I do think government funding should be allowed, since that would facilitate the development of non-embryo stem cell cures. Recent articles concerning this have been published in respectable journals and maazines - the potential cure existing but the governmental bans and lack of funding preventing people from getting it. If the anti-embryo and anti-clone people would back off the emotional blackmail and scare tactics and actually use their brains for a change, we could be much further along than we are now. One person's religious beliefs should NOT infringe on another person's right to health care.

Q: explain why pharmaceutical companies may hope that stem cell research does not provide a cure to diabetes?

A: Well if most people with diabetes could be cured then the drug companies would lose their lucrative over priced strangle hold on us diabetics. They would have to find another cash cow like diabetes. An annoying commercial like the Bumbling willford Brimley's "Test your diabetes and test often. " Yeah, at a dollar a strip.Probably cost 1 cent to make.Or a brand name (Metformin) cost $117 a month while generic cost $18 a month for 2000 mg. a day.I bet they hate the word Generic!!!

Q: What is wrong with embryonic stem cell research?
I have type 1 diabetes and I think it's an important step in finding a cure. When they do this don't they put an unused egg and unused sperm together? The materials would go unused any way and even if it were to be used for a person they could still die in the womb. Abortion ends life and is legal while stem cells are only the potential for life. Even if the fetus was born they could end up with very poor quality of life, while with stem cell research can improve quality of life. So why do people oppose stem cell research so much?

A: All, research has the potential to go over board, or do so unethically. I think stem cell research, is important, but needs to be watched. Hitler's doctors, did research that could and has helped advance medical treatments, but in doing so his doctors tortured millions of people, in their research. Our own government IE the USA did studies on syphilis and the effect on black men, in the later 50's. People are afraid that if not careful stem cell research will cross the line of being ethical. And there are still others who believe that as soon as the egg is fertilized by the sperm, it is a human being, and fully alive, and have all the rights to be protected. What makes it hard in the USA is the Contradiction in our laws. A woman who is 2 months pregnant, and hit by a drunk driver, the driver will be charged with 2 counts of murder in the 2nd degree. But if she choices she is unable to care properly for her unborn child she can have an abortion, within the first 3 months of getting pregnant. We need a balance on both sides. People who fight to do the research, and people who make sure they do so ethically.

Q: What are your thoughts about Obama overturning ban on stem cell research?
This is a survey about in favor or opposing. I am in favor of stem cell research because it cures many ailments and diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, diabetes, possibly heart disease, and other illnesses.

A: I'm all for finding cures but we are messing with nature and one of these days some of our newborns are going to have one eye, an antennae, to short leg stubs, and one arm with one forefinger. Remember the thalidomide babies?

Q: How come stem cell research are still banned?
I was reading a story the other day about how a guy was hiv free after his stem cell transplant. http://www.stemcelldaily.com/man-appears-free-of-hiv-after-stem-cell-transplant-cnn/ If stem cell can might be a missing link to provide a cure for diseases like HIV, cancer, diabetes and other sicknesses, then why arent we putting more money and research into this subject?

A: After talking about this with my biology professor I have learned that there is a lot of controversy that follows the whole idea, let alone the actual process, of stem cell research. What researchers are trying to get out of researching stem cells is the ability to take a cell and see the actual progression of a disease, thus finding the cause. There is also potential in curing a wide variety diseases as well as the possibility of organ regeneration. While there is a lot we can gain from this it is still considered a major 'moral' conflict. There are two types of cells that can be used for the 'stem cell research' process, they include somatic and embryonic. Today the major portion of stem cell research funding is in support of somatic cells, which are basically skin, muscle tissues. However, when dealing with embryonic cells, an embryo is used. The controversy that follows this is 'when is a human being considered a human being?' For many people an embryo is still considered a living thing, and therefore should not be 'sacrificed' for the advancement of modern medicine. It's not that there is a lack of money, it's more that there is a lack of support which keeps this continuously under discussion.

Q: Stem cell research will never ever work???
Two or three years ago, a commercial with a bunch of celebrities opposing stem cell research came out, They claimed that stem cells will never provide any useful medical treatments. Everyone knew that in reality, there motives were religious. I wrote a question a couple years ago on here stating that I supported stem cell research. Half the people responded by calling me a baby killer. If you read the link above, you will know that they have now cured a few people who have type 1 diabetes with stem cell therapy and now they are trying to cure cancer with the same therapy. After all the name calling people like me had to endure from idiotic religious people for supporting stem cell research, it’s finally nice to throw it back into their faces that we were right. It’s also nice to finally be able to hold them accountable for the suffering of all those who did not receive the treatment in time. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/health/article1637528.ece

A: Couldn't agree with you more! This has been one of the most maddening things I've seen with the recent fundamentalist movement in the US. Most of the people that are so against this kind of research don't have a clue what it entails beyond something they heard in bible study; which is unfortunately very typical behavior for a believer. A little corrupted "knowledge" can cause a great deal of harm in the hands of the wrong people. Certainly, now we have been able to obtain some stem cells from other sources, but the advances we are now just beginning to see have been pushed back for the better part of a decade. How many people have suffered and died needlessly because of a minority group of bigoted, deluded jack-asses? This should be nothing short of a criminal offense in my opinion. -"It's not what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you're sure you know, but are wrong about, that causes your downfall."

Q: Stem cell research!?
If there is anyone in here who is against stem cell research because they think it is about developing life just to kill it....i'd like to hear what you have to say. I have type 1 diabetes and with stem cell research i could be cured, along with so many other people. Stem cells aren't alive, they have no brain, they can't think, they aren't a person. For those of you who think that life starts when the sperm meets the egg, think about this. hypohetically if you were standing at the top floor of a building with a little baby on one side of you and a cooler full of 100 pre-furtilized eggs on the other and the building was on fire and you couldn't carry them both down the stairs. which one would you take? ?

A: Actually, you know nothing about stem cell reseach if you think the only kind is embyonic. Many people are in favor of the other three (yes, that's right, THREE) kinds of stem cell research. These other methods have either already been proven or show better resurts then the embryonic research. There is Adult Stem Cells, which I've heard are actually used to create insuline for Diabeties. Oh, that just punched a hole in your balloon. There is Imbilocal Cord Stem Cells and Embryonic Fluid Stem Cells, both of which are perfectly acceptable. And, did you know that those eggs that you use for Stem Cell research could still produce children? Yeah, they can. I've seen stories about families who adopt these eggs (now dubbed medical waste) and have happy, healthy children. Even after being frozen for a few years. They are still able to produce children if given a chance. After all, they have to start to become children to have stem cells. If you don't know the facts, then you can't make a logical decision. There is research out there to help you, but if you are stuck on only one way, then you'll never find the answers. It always amazes me that science will grind to a halt for one process when there is evidence that another way will produce the same, if not better results. So, what will it be? Keep running in circles and complaining because you can't cut up some embryos, or actually put your time and money on a method that works? Embroynic stem cell research isn't the only answer, but the other three ways are not only safer, but ethically better. And, to answer your silly question, we would save the babies because they are already alive. That doesn't mean we don't care about the frozen eggs, but we in our panic, we'd think about the tiny babies that are already born. Your question is only designed to make people look bad. You're not very smart.

Q: What has stem cell research accomplished so far?
Pleas! I do not want an emotional or political answer, I do not care if you are prolife or proscience. What I am asking is: Has there been a cure of a disease in humans? Has there been a cure of a diesease in animals? Has there been a treatment of an uncurable disease in humans or animals which gave partial revarsal of a disease state or halted a disease process? What proof is there that it will or can cure diabetes, parkinsons, demetia, spinal cord injury, or any other illness. Was ther any chance of Christopher Reeves or Ronald Reagan being alive today had federal fundings een made available for stem cell reaserch? Do you think, Michael J. Fox or Patti Label will realize cures of their illnesses in thir lifetime with stem cells? Please Objctive answers only from either side...I do not want emotional, political rants!

A: Science wise yes in animals. I don't remember the exact details but a couple spent about $50,000 on their dog for a stem cell procedure. The dog is now back to normal. This happened about 2 or 3 years ago. Scientists have injected stem cells into monkey's that have a money form of Lou Gehrig's disease and it showed good results.

Q: Why dont they make stem cell research legal? It will cure a lot of diseases...like DIABETES. which i have....?

A: There is currently no Federal funding for stem cell research. Many of these cells come from three - five day old embryos that would otherwise be destroyed. Obama will add federal funding a stop bans that already exist on this. I agree with you.
