Q: why do a patient having a juvenile-onset diabetes develop hyperglycemia?

A: Hyperglycemia is high blood sugar. Your body works off a simple recipe to make energy... Sugar + insulin = fat cells. Need both ingredients. Your pancreas provides the insulin, but a diabetic doesn't make insulin. Without it, the sugar sits in the blood and you get "high blood sugar" or hyperglycemia.

Q: Does Anyone know of a cure for Juvenile Onset Type 1 Diabetes?
I'm desperate for a sure cure!

A: no there is no cure but i 2 was a type one diabetic but my kidneys failed after 26 years and i had a kidney and pancreas transplant and i am longer a diabetic. it is a hard way to get cured but at least i am sttill alive.

Q: My daughter has metabolic syndrome -- a pre-adult onset diabetes. How can I get her in touch with other teens?
who are in the same situation or who WERE in the same situation who now have diabetes? All of the support groups in our area are for teens with juvenile onset diabetes. I've found the same to be true for on-line support groups. Any help would be much appreciated.

A: Childrenwithdiabetes.com It has chat rooms and kids pages. Its a great place. I have been there many times.

Q: my husband has type 1 diabetes, juvenile onset?
is my son more likely to have it as well? are there any signs i can watch for? he is 10 months old. i breastfed until he was 5 months old. however, when he was born, he was 10 lbs. and his sugar was actually low, so they gave him formula right away. (rather than sugar saline). any information you could give me would help. thanks a bunch!

A: Your son may be pre-disposed but you just have to wait and see. Simply be aware of the symtoms and let him live normal life. As a parent you'll worry of course but there's nothing you can do to prevent Type 1 if it does rear it's ugly head. Being aware of the symptoms and getting him treatment ASAP before DKA begins is critical to avoid a stay in the ICU. If you simply MUST know if he'll be type 1, I believe there are blood tests that can be performed which look for antibodies that are present which may indicate that Type 1 is more likely. Those tests aren't 100% though. You can probably ask your husband's endocrinologist about the likelyhood of this happening to your son and also about the antibody testing. A good website for info for your family is www.childrenwithdiabetes.com (all about type 1).

Q: My girlfriend has juvenile diabetes...should I worry about potential serious problems she may have?
She's had diabetes since she was 9 and has an insulin pump to control her blood sugar level. She seems fine right now - just gets occasional headaches now and then. But I was talking with my parents about it and they said juvenile onset is a lot different than adult onset diabetes. Does anybody have any experience with this? And should I be concerned that she may have serious health problems later down the line, problems having children, etc.?

A: if you are quiet serious for marriage with her then plz go a head and take very good care of her self. regards

Q: juvenile diabetes help?
okay so I was diagnose with juvenile diabetes in march and I have not gone to the doctors yet. I am in the honey moon stage so lucky i've managed. SO that brings me to the next thought. I am terrified of needles and I think I am starting to some out of the honey moon stage because my sugar has been higher then ever lately. So I know there going to give me insulin. I am so scared. I am terrified of needles, to an extreme point. I am 18 yo and when i have to go to the doctors to get a shot i freak out and cry, yeah i know baby. I cant help it though. I don't know how i am suppose to give my self shots every day.I am just scared about the whole thing. Does anyone have any suggestions or help. What happens in an appointment, what does and insulin shot feel like, should i be scared. Does any one remember Thor first appointment. Any one willing to talk to me? People with juvenile diabetes please, adult onset is completely different. and please no "your such a baby deal with it your fat... blah blah" none of that bs. Im so sick of hearing im fat because i have diabetes. Juvenile diabetes has nothing to do with weight and I am not fat.

A: A common fear called trepanophobia. You simply have to get over it. Once you experience enough injections and realize there is rarely any pain at all, you will overcome it. The needle is TINY, since the insulin only has to get under your skin, not into your vein or anything! Occasionally, you hit a nerve, and it's like getting pinched or biting a nail too close...not even as bad. The only questions are how MUCH of a blubbering baby you are about it and how frustrated the doctors and nurses get trying to condition you to inject yourself properly!

Q: Do you believe the anthrax vaccine is causing diabetes?
I have found articles that say that the anthrax vaccine given to our troops is causing life threatening insulin dependent diabetes. My husband was active duty Army and willfully took this vaccine. After taking the vaccine he fell very ill and was diagnosed with a late onset of juvenile diabetes. He was then medically discharged from service even though he tried to fight it. I am now learning that they are allowing soldiers to stay in after going through the same thing my husband has. My husbands military career was and still is his life and he wants back in more than anything. So I am feeling a little like the military had no problem giving him diabetes but now that they have they are saying he is damaged goods. What is your opinion on this situation? Ok myabe I wasnt specific in my last post I know the anthrax vaccine is causing diabetes here are a few links http://www.anthraxvaccine.org/emn.html and http://www.vaccines.net/gulfwar.htm the statistics state that every 1 in 1000 soldiers that take this shot develop insulin dependant diabetes.

A: People got diabetes before there were vaccines. Until quite recently, diabetics died of the disease, or complications of the disease. I very much doubt that your husband's diabetes was caused by the vaccine. Millions of people who weren't exposed to the vaccine also develop Type I diabetes. Your husband might look into becoming a military contractor.

Q: What is causing my left hand to be numb, tingly, and weak?
Recently I've noticed that I am having a difficult time with my left hand. It has become quite numb and tingly (particularly in my pinky and ring finger), and occasionally hurts when I make a fist. I've also noticed that it has become rather weak as well. I am having a difficult time typing, opening clothes pins, latchinghooks on garments, etc., etc., because it feels so weak. On a side note which may be related, I have had juvenile onset diabetes for 20 years now, but I have not experienced any problems with neuropathy in my legs or feet. Also, the numbness and tingling has happened before (although the weakness is a new thing), but it usually goes away within a day or so. This has been going on for about a week now. Thanks!

A: the best answer i could give is poor blood circulation in your left hand, and it would probably be a good thing to get it checked out because it also is a sign people get right before a stroke or heart attack!

Q: where can I find a good specialists for migraine headaches, seizures?
I have a daughter that has continuous migraine headaches and there's no medication that is touching them. Plus she has grand mal seizures. My daughter is 24 soon to be 25 yrs. old. She's a type 1 diabetic, juvenile onset diabetes the doctors call it. No one knows what's causing the seizures at all. Last night at the emergency rm. she had seizures and it scared a PA who knows my daughter. They admitted her in to the hospital.

A: I'm also a lifetime migraine sufferer, I feel your pain...try the Cleveland Clinic...there have branches all over the US..I have been many time in the Hospital too...

President Bush just Vetoed A Bill That would have allowed Stem Cell Research for Donated Stem Cells That were set for Destruction and could have been used to save Millions of lives. Folks with Diabetes or Parkinson's or cancer or Spinal problems or Alzheimer's were given a brief chance at a normal life and Bush just threw that and there chance at normal lives away. Q: My 3 year old has large Ketones in his urine?
My 3 year old son had been potty trained for about 3 months when he started wetting the bed. I thought that maybe it was related to lifestyle change, but then he has recently started peeing his pants a couple times a day. I took him to the Dr. and he was referred to a urologist. The urologist did a UA and said that he had "large ketones" in his urine. She checked his blood sugar and it was 66. About 2 1/2 hours after breakfast. She said that this will have to be monitored in the future? Everything I look up comes back to juvenile onset diabetes? Should I be more concerned than what the Dr. appeared to be?

A: Try asking for a referral to a pediatric endocrinologist. Children should not have ketones in their urine.

Q: coxsackie virus and diabetes?
my daughter was just diagnosed in the er with coxsackie virus she has a follow up appt in a couple of days I never heard of this, and the er doc didnt tell me anything really so looking around the internet (until her appt) i saw something saying, this could be the onset of juvenile diabtes NOW im scared! I dont want to look on the internet anymore anymore but could 1 of you good people out there tell me IS COXSACKIE the onset of diabetes OR ANY other more serious illness thanks!! my daughter is 22 months and has NEVER ever had much of an appetite is this related to anything?

A: I am not aware of any connection between cosackievirus and juvenile diabetes. Coxsackieviruses are part of the enterovirus family of viruses (which also includes polioviruses and hepatitis A virus) that live in the human digestive tract. They can spread from person to person, usually on unwashed hands and surfaces contaminated by feces, where they can live for several days. http://kidshealth.org/parent/infections/bacterial_viral/coxsackie.html This is something that you need to research so that you will be informed and prepared, go to sites with reputatable information such as the MayoClinc or WedMD or the one listed above. Not all information on the internet is reliable so make sure your sites have reliable medical information and not just opinions or personal stories.

Q: Regarding Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy?
My family is dealing with a person who fits this description to a tee!! My question is, can a person with MSBP bring on the onset of juvenile diabetes?? The child I am referring to seems to ALWAYS have some minor/major problem (along with the sibling) while in her care, but are always fine away from her. These children are always in and out of doctors offices, therapists, etc.. When this MSBP lady does not like the outcome or if the therapist, doc, etc.. does not agree with her she drops that person immediately saying they are not fit to practice! It turns out that this child had been wetting the bed (supposedly) all the time so the mother dramatically rushed this child to the doctors w/o consulting the childs father who is very involved. Turns out the child was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. This was 4 years ago. The child always seems to have either severe lows with mother or severe highs and both children are sick with stomach flu w/ her at least once per month. Any thoughts

A: Very serious issues. Certainly, the history suggests the possibility of MBP/ Intervening on behalf of the child may be difficult, but wuld suggest you contact childrens protective services with the story, and let them investigate. This can be done anonymously in most jurisdictions. Docs are often blindsided by this problem, as they want to believe parents. Parents can be devious and ingenious in the ways they can bring on symptoms in their children. Children die from MBP, and you should contact the authorities with your concerns.
